Flex or Javascript + xhtml

Can't we do both?

Having worked on more than a few non-trivial web applications in my time I've become all too aware of the vagaries of extending xhtml, css and Javascript to places they perhaps ought not go - and I don't just mean Internet Explorer!

In a sea of bastardized standards, quirky implementations and plain old pigheadedness, the thought of transcending the predominant publishing and application platform of the day is quite appealing. Which is why I've leapt at the chance to participate on a couple of Flex projects (one commercial, the other non-profit).

However, with a few more development miles now under my belt, I've started to miss the ridiculous ease with which things can sometimes be accomplished with plain old xhtml and Javascript.

Also problematic, and perhaps more a question of familiarity (although the mix of mxml, css and Actionscript feels pretty familiar), is productivity. Flex development is... well... slower.

Perhaps I should move to a model where RIAs are not wholly constructed in Flex, but rather are based on xhtml, css and Javascript with Flex widgets augmenting the application with richer than otherwise possible functionality. Certainly Adobe isn't averse to the thought given AIR will support such hybrid applications.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for dropping in.

This is the personal website of Cam MacRae. Any opinions expressed here are my entirely own, and have jack to do with my employer.

It's the product of a little elbow grease, the news.ycombinator noprocrast feature, and a healthy dose of Django.

A Django site.
