Making Safari better

Safaribug, anyone?

Duncan Riley asks what can be done to make Safari better.

The obvious answer is to grab the source for WebKit and start hacking, but that's almost certainly beyond the reach of most mere mortals.

I use both Safari and Firefox every day via an odd arrangement whereby day to day browsing and development is done in Firefox, and RSS feeds and any posts/articles I click through to are read in Safari. Safari makes a great RSS reader and because it tends not to grow quite so enormous as FF, I find I can leave it open for days at a time. Not so FF, which seems to struggle after an hour or so although I think this may have something to do with the debug version of the Flash 9 plug-in used for Flex debugging so I'm hesitant to say it's all down to Firefox.

I've got my own wish list for Safari. Right at the very top (probably items one, two and three!) is a Firebug-esque plug-in. Firebug has revolutionised how I develop for the web - I'm certainly not alone on this one as in our office, screens that were once cluttered with Notepad are now filled with DOM inspection frames and watch lists. It's an essential bit of kit.

Finally, being able to bind keywords to a url in Firefox is great. For example, to search Google I need only type g search terms into the address bar. Goodbye separate search tool bar! If anyone knows how to do that in Safari please let me know.

Thanks for dropping in.

This is the personal website of Cam MacRae. Any opinions expressed here are my entirely own, and have jack to do with my employer.

It's the product of a little elbow grease, the news.ycombinator noprocrast feature, and a healthy dose of Django.

A Django site.
