Hearing in crowds (Me Too!)

What?

Michael Arrington has a problem hearing in crowds. So does Duncan Riley. At the risk of metooism, I've got a similar problem - and so do a great many other people I know.

In my case, I even have trouble ordering drinks in a busy bar, so much so that I tend to carry notes I know are large enough to cover the round because I'm just never going to hear the price. As Duncan says, it's hardly a disability, but rather something to which you adapt.

I must confess there are times at functions when I nod and smile in general agreement even if I haven't the foggiest idea what was said. Of course on paper (and blog posts) it all sounds quite rude, but it's usually line ball between saying "What?" for the forth time, or sending the proper signals.

And very often I've gleaned the intent of the conversation from the many non-verbal clues.

Trolls will be trolls, but it beggars belief that Mike should be attacked not for appearing aloof, but for recognising that he may have inadvertently cause offense to a guest and seeking to put things right.

Jealously really is a bitch, eh?

Thanks for dropping in.

This is the personal website of Cam MacRae. Any opinions expressed here are my entirely own, and have jack to do with my employer.

It's the product of a little elbow grease, the news.ycombinator noprocrast feature, and a healthy dose of Django.

A Django site.
