Sayeth Arrington: It makes Flash/Flex look like an absolute toy.
Hmmmm. I watched some of the videos from Mix07 and there's not doubt Silverlight looks very cool. But does it make Flash/Flex look like an absolute toy? Not quite.
It all seems reminiscent of the hoopla when the .NET platform was launched. Sure there are scad loads of developers on the .NET platform, but the platform - as a rule - strolls the trail blazed by Java. Of course there are plenty of innovations in .NET that make the platform compelling, but excluding Mono it just doesn't have same reach. For those already using Java there is very little point to switch.
So too it is with Silverlight. Flash and later Flex and Apollo blazed the trail, Silverlight should mop up. However, without a multi platform development suite I think we'll see Silverlight evolve as the me too RIA platform.
One thing is for sure: With three players in the market we're likely to see an acceleration in innovation. A great thing for all developers.
